In 1991 Juliette Lewis played Danielle Bowden in Martin Scorsese's Cape Fear and was an Oscar nominee for supporting actress with that part; Robert De Niro was nominated in a leading category from the same film. By the AFI, Scorsese claimed to have hated the screenplay on his first three readings and to have imposed twenty-four drafts. Two years later she was Becky in Lasse Hallstrom's What's Eating Gilbert Grape. The shooting of that film began in Austin on 2 November 1992, and an abandoned house in Pflugerville was used as the Grape family home; Johnny Depp's joining the cast was confirmed in the Screen International of 24 July 1992, and the Oscar nomination out of that film went to Leonardo DiCaprio, in a supporting category. On Film Independent's list of nominees she appears as supporting female at the 2003 ceremony.
