100 Days of Love

Jenuse Mohamed's 2015 Malayalam film follows Balan, a newspaper columnist, meeting a childhood friend years later and falling in love with her. Learning that she is engaged to someone else, he decides to win her within a hundred days. The film's appeal is less in the story than in its atmosphere: the care in the colour palette, the production design and Govind Menon's music give it its own tone. The rapport between Dulquer Salmaan and Nithya Menen works. Its weakness is leaving the hero's persistence unquestioned and making the turn in the final section too easy. The story is faithful to its template and holds no surprises. Who it's for: viewers who like Malayalam romantic comedy and visually careful films. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a story outside the template, or troubled by persistent pursuit being romanticised.
