What 19 Is About

A university student is kidnapped by a few young men in a car. Nobody asks for a ransom. The men have neither a plan nor a purpose; they are drifting because they are bored. Along the way the student is badly treated. But the closeness among them slowly draws him in as well. The one who was the victim turns gradually into an accomplice. The film does not try to explain that turn; it shows it as it is. Aimlessness itself becoming a form of violence is the real subject. The eighty three minutes are given to a single journey. Kazushi Watanabe’s Japanese film was completed in 2000.
