What 4:30 Is About

Royston Tan's second feature is set in Singapore. Xiao Wu, eleven years old, is left alone at home after school because his mother is permanently away on business. There is a lodger in the flat as well, a Korean man in his thirties who is in a bad way. Every night at half past four the boy slips into his room, goes through his things and takes small objects. They share no language, and this was never a relationship built through talking anyway. The film sets two people side by side who want contact and cannot manage it; what it is about is loneliness, not romance. It runs almost silently, on very few lines of dialogue.
