What 40 Is About
In Istanbul the paths of three strangers meet over a bag. Godwill, who came from Nigeria, works in Tarlabaşı and saves what he earns; he is waiting to get across to Paris and to the woman he loves. The others have their own reckonings. Then a bag full of money turns up and all three go after the same thing. Emre Şahin's Turkish film was shot entirely on real locations and the images stay close to documentary. The telling sets luck, fate and faith side by side: everyone takes what happens to them as a sign. The film shows the position of migrants in Istanbul and the trafficking of people plainly, without turning it into spectacle. The cast mixes Turkish and foreign actors.
