What A Borrowed Life Is About

Sega is a coal miner living in a Taiwan that grew up under Japanese rule and passed to Chinese rule after the war. He is attached to Japanese culture, and his children, born into the new order, cannot understand that attachment; what they learn at school and what their father tells them do not match. The film follows the father and the son who watches him from a distance, from the fifties into the eighties, and what it produces is the portrait of a man left standing at the edge of his own life. Wu Nien-jen wrote it out of his own father and made it as his first film; the original title is simply the word children use when they call their father. Tsai Chen-nan plays the lead in the hundred and sixty seven minute Taiwanese film.
