What A Brief Vacation Is About
Clara works in a factory in Milan and is the household’s only earner: her husband cannot work after an injury, and the children, her mother-in-law and her brother-in-law are all on her back. When she is diagnosed with tuberculosis she is sent to a sanatorium in the Alps and for the first time in her life has time that belongs to her. The illness gives her a pause, and the pause shows her that another kind of life is possible; the real tension of the film is in what recovery means, since recovering means going back. Vittorio De Sica made it at seventy-three, reunited with Cesare Zavattini, with whom he had worked for decades; it is his penultimate film and the last of his to be released in America. Florinda Bolkan plays Clara and Renato Salvatori her husband.
