What A Brutal Game Is About
A severe man living alone in the countryside takes his disabled daughter out of the institution she was in and brings her home. He sets her rules of his own devising: hard, unbending, most of them heavier than anyone could carry. She resists and he does not soften. Underneath the struggle is a life he has told nobody about. Jean-Claude Brisseau's first feature asks where love stops being love and becomes ownership, and where discipline becomes cruelty. Bruno Cremer plays the father, with Emmanuelle Debever as the daughter. Shot cheaply, in natural light, with almost no music, and unnervingly calm about all of it.
