What A Day in the Death of Joe Egg Is About
Bri and Sheila’s daughter Josephine was born with severe cerebral palsy; she cannot speak, cannot move on her own, and her care takes up the whole day. The couple try to carry that weight with black humour: they take turns speaking in her voice, joke with each other, put on small performances inside the house. But the exhaustion and the anger under the joking keep leaking through, and the same care that holds the marriage together is what is rotting it. Peter Nichols adapted the film from his own play, and the play came out of his own life. Alan Bates and Janet Suzman appear in Peter Medak’s hundred and six minute British film, completed in 1972.
