A house in Provence. Henri Marcoux, a wealthy wine producer, lives there with his wife, his daughter and his son. He keeps a mistress, Léda, in the house next door. Everyone knows and nobody says it. His daughter's fiancé László is an outsider in the house: coarse, mocking, bound by none of its rules, and he picks at every tension in the family. One morning Léda is found dead. The family immediately blames the milkman. László goes after another possibility and starts looking inside the house. Claude Chabrol directs, in his first colour film. A hundred and ten minutes. Jean-Paul Belmondo plays László, the part that got him noticed before Breathless. It is generally taken as the first version of every bourgeois-family film Chabrol went on to make.
