What A Hundred Flowers Is About
Yuriko is diagnosed with dementia and her mind begins to be erased fast. For her son Izumi, on the other hand, the memories of his mother are still as vivid as the moment they happened; one of them in particular, the day he believed she had disappeared, will not let him go. The film tells the illness from both sides at once: the woman who cannot remember and the son who cannot escape remembering. The account builds no large scenes; it moves inside everyday care and measures the distance between two people. What comes out is less a story of illness than a reckoning between a mother and a son. Masaki Suda and Mieko Harada appear in Genki Kawamura’s hundred and four minute Japanese film, completed in 2022.
