What A Man Alone Is About
A gunfighter is left without water in the middle of the desert. Walking, he comes across a robbed stagecoach; every passenger inside has been killed. He takes one of the horses and rides into town to report it. In the town the killings are pinned on him. On top of that he is held responsible for the murder of the banker. With nowhere to run he hides in the basement of the sheriff's house; the sheriff is sick in bed and his daughter is there too. Ray Milland directed the film as well as starring in it; this was his first work as a director. His most striking choice is at the opening: the man barely speaks for around half an hour and the story is told entirely in pictures. Mary Murphy is the sheriff's daughter, and Raymond Burr and Ward Bond are the men who hold the town's power. It was shot in colour and is not an ordinary piece among the westerns Republic put out. Ninety-six minutes.
