A Million Minutes

Christopher Doll's 2024 German film adapts Wolf Küper's own memoir. Vera and Wolf live in Berlin with two small children; Vera runs the household alongside part-time work, while Wolf advises the United Nations as a scientist, trying to convey how serious the coming climate crisis is. While doctors debate the developmental condition of their five-year-old daughter Nina, the family spends steadily less time together. At a certain point Wolf proposes dropping everything for a long journey. The film is plainly inclined to romanticise that decision, though its observation about a working order that makes family life impossible is accurate. Karoline Herfurth and Tom Schilling lead. Who it's for: viewers who like family drama drawn from a true story and narratives about slowing down. Who it's not for: anyone who thinks a decision like this is only available at a certain income; the film barely opens that question.
