Maria Meriko What A Simple Story Is About
A woman comes to Paris with her small daughter to look for work. The money she has will last a few days, and as the search goes on everything shrinks: first the room, then the food, then what is in the bag. Without telling anyone they end up on the street, and the woman tries all the while not to let the child feel it. The film describes this without staging dramatic scenes, almost as though keeping a record; what happens is not a great catastrophe but a daily and quiet descent. Marcel Hanoun’s sixty eight minute French film was completed in 1959 and presents becoming poor as a process rather than as a moral lesson.
