What A Story of the Forest: Mavka Is About
Mavka, a forest nymph, falls in love with Lukash, a village youth, and their brief happiness ends when he is forced to marry Kilina. The spirit of the forest turns Lukash into a wolf as punishment for his betrayal; the strength of Mavka’s love breaks that spell, but Kilina then curses the nymph and turns her into a weeping willow. Yurii Illienko’s eighty three minute film was adapted from the play Lesya Ukrainka wrote in 1912 and brings mythological figures out of Ukrainian folklore onto the screen. Its poetic language did not fit the socialist realist measure of the time, so the Soviet film press attacked it and it never received a wide release. According to the Dovzhenko Centre the Ukrainian language version is considered lost, and only the Russian version survives in the archives.
