What A Tale of Samurai Cooking Is About
In the Edo period the master cook who runs the kitchen of the Kaga domain for the Funaki family notices an exceptionally gifted young woman and marries her to his son. Oharu, twenty-seven, handles a knife perfectly; her husband Yasunobu is interested in swordplay rather than cooking and is cold towards her. The film is a story about a craft as much as a love story, describing a branch of the samurai class that cooked rather than fought, and a kitchen with a hierarchy and a discipline of its own. Yuzo Asahara directs, with Aya Ueto and Kengo Kora sharing the leads.
