A Very Natural Thing

David is in his twenties and has recently left a monastery; he now teaches in New York. He meets Mark in a bar and attaches himself fast, and before long asks whether they can live together. It goes well for a while. Then it emerges that the two of them mean different things by commitment: Mark wants other encounters, David tries to go along with it while seeing the relationship as a marriage. When the break comes, how David recovers from it is an open question. Purusha Larkin directed it in 1974, and it is among the first American films to present a gay relationship as an ordinary relationship rather than a tragedy or a scandal. Eighty-six minutes. It also uses real footage from the Christopher Street march.
