A woman with one side of her face scarred has lived for years off blackmail and fraud, keeping away from people. One day she meets a plastic surgeon and the chance of an operation opens up. With her face changed she decides to leave her old life; but the men she left behind do not take long to find her. Directed by Gustaf Molander, this Swedish film gave Ingrid Bergman one of her strongest roles before she went to Hollywood. The telling treats the woman's face not as a fate but as the result of how people have treated her. A few years later George Cukor remade it with Joan Crawford, and watching the two side by side makes Bergman's plainness here even clearer.
