What Aavasavyuham: The Arbit Documentation of an Amphibian Hunt Is About
Krishand's 2022 Malayalam film is set on a small island near Kochi. A man called Joy appears; fishermen describe what he can do in water, and the story grows as it passes from mouth to mouth. The film builds itself as a documentary. Witnesses speak to camera and experts comment; using that form, the narrative describes the ecological effect of a petroleum plant on the area and does not separate fact from legend. The science fiction elements are delivered on a low budget and openly as fakery. The tone is both comic and unsettling. Who it's for: those who like genre mixtures and films with an environmental theme. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a straight narrative; the film proceeds as mock documentary.
