Giuseppe Calcagno What Acla's Descent into Floristella Is About
The place is Sicily and the time the nineteen thirties. Aclà is a boy of twelve. His destitute parents sell him to the sulfur mine at Floristella. From Monday to Saturday he works underground in passages lit by candles. He is not fed enough and the work is beyond his body. The man who bought him beats him, and the boy lives under constant threat. Aclà plans his escape to the sea. The film tells about child labour and about what the Sicilian sulfur mines were. The camera shows the work underground as it is and builds no heroism out of it. This was Aurelio Grimaldi’s first feature, an Italian film of 1992, eighty six minutes long.
