What Address Unknown Is About
Two men run a gallery together in San Francisco: one goes back to Germany, the other stays in America. They keep writing to each other. Martin, the one who returned, is distant about the new order at first, but in time he moves closer to its language and its arrangements. The daughter of the partner who stayed is over there. The letters grow colder, and then they turn dangerous. William Cameron Menzies directed the film from Kressmann Taylor's story in letters, published in 1938. The story had caused a stir in America when it appeared. Menzies was principally an art director, and here too he builds the image out of shadow and sharp angles. Paul Lukas takes the lead. Seventy-five minutes with nothing wasted.
