What Åke and His World Is About
Ake is six years old and his father is the doctor in a small Swedish town. The film tells everything from his point of view: the house, his older sister, his cousin Anne-Marie who lives with them and has schizophrenia, the caretaker Bergstrom he is afraid of. His closest friend is Kalle Nubb, a sickly but thoroughly kind boy who has just lost his mother and whose father drinks. The account does not dress childhood up as a sweet period; it leaves the fear, the not understanding and the unreadable corners of the adult world exactly as they are. It was adapted from the book by Bertil Malmberg. Allan Edwall’s ninety nine minute Swedish film was completed in 1984.
