What American Heart Is About

A man just out of prison is tracked down by the teenage son he has not seen in years, and the boy wants the two of them to build a life together. The attempt starts in Seattle and keeps running into the fact that the father can barely carry his own life, let alone anybody else's. It is Martin Bell's first fiction feature; he had made Streetwise in 1984, a documentary about Seattle street kids, and this grew out of one of those kids and his relationship with his imprisoned father. Jeff Bridges won an Independent Spirit Award for it.
