Sachy's 2015 Malayalam film follows a former navy officer returning to the Lakshadweep islands. He is searching for Nadira, whom he lost years ago; the people and places he meets again bring him face to face with all the consequences of a forbidden relationship. The film's visual ambition lies in the islands. Underwater photography, coral reefs and a little-known geography had not been used at this scale in Malayalam cinema; place carries the emotional weight of the narrative. The telling moves between past and present and builds its romance through religion and social pressure. Prithviraj Sukumaran leads with Biju Menon in support. The rhythm slows in the second half and approaches melodrama. Who it's for: those who like Malayalam romantic drama and place-driven cinema. Who it's not for: viewers looking for a measured emotional tone; the film openly reaches for feeling towards the end.
