Anchakkallakokkan

Ullas Jose Chemban's 2024 Malayalam film follows a cowardly constable on his first days of duty. On his first night watch, the convict held at the station is after revenge and the night runs long. The structure rests on one night and one place. The narrative withholds information; whom the convict is angry with and why emerges slowly, and the hierarchy at the station comes apart. The cast is largely unknown and the dialogue in the speech of north Kerala. The images are dark, the humour dry and the violence enters abruptly. The narrative manufactures no hero. Who it's for: those who like Malayalam black comedy and single-location thrillers. Who it's not for: viewers expecting explanation; the film does not supply its context internally.
