What Angels and Insects Is About
Victorian England. William Adamson, an impoverished naturalist, is taken into the house of the wealthy Sir Harald Alabaster, where he tries to carry on his work on ant colonies. The daughter of the house, Eugenia, distracts him, and they marry. The longer he lives there the more he notices what goes on behind the closed doors, and what he sees resembles the insect societies he studies rather more closely than is comfortable. Philip Haas adapted A. S. Byatt's novella Morpho Eugenia. Mark Rylance is William, Patsy Kensit is Eugenia and Kristin Scott Thomas is the governess. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for costume design.
