What Antonio's Secret Is About
In Joselito Altarejos’s 2008 Filipino film, Antonio is a teenager whose emerging sexuality is pushing him away from his friends and his family. When his uncle Jonbert moves in with him and his mother, the boy briefly believes he has found someone who understands him. The older man’s attention turns into abuse, and the family is broken apart by an act of violence. The film sits at the head of a wave of Filipino cinema centred on gay characters, a wave later criticised for sliding into an erotic formula, and it is argued over on those terms as much as on its own. Kenjie Garcia plays Antonio and Josh Ivan Morales plays Jonbert.
