What Apprentice Is About
Aiman, twenty-eight, is transferred as a correctional officer to Singapore's highest-security prison. There he draws the attention of Rahim, the chief executioner, and before long becomes his apprentice. His interest in the work is not only professional: Rahim is the man who hanged his father years ago, and Aiman has never told him so. Boo Junfeng's film screened in Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2016 and was Singapore's Oscar submission. Rather than arguing for or against capital punishment, it watches how the man who pulls the lever does the job. Fir Rahman plays Aiman, Wan Hanafi Su plays Rahim.
