Arif V 216

Fourteen years after G.O.R.A., Cem Yılmaz returned to the same universe and put Arif at its centre. Directed by Kıvanç Baruönü, the film crosses Arif's path with a robot called 216 and carries on the series' vein of science fiction parody. It opened in January 2018 and sold more than one million three hundred thousand tickets in its first three days, eventually reaching roughly five million viewers, which made it the most-watched film of Yılmaz's career. The budget was nine million dollars and the gross passed sixty-two million lira. Critical response did not match those figures. The two objections raised most often were that the film recycles its own older jokes and that the product placement is dense enough to interrupt the rhythm of scenes. Commercially it is the peak of the series; creatively it is its most contested entry. Who it is for: viewers attached to the G.O.R.A. universe who want Yılmaz's familiar comic register. Who it is not for: anyone hoping for something new or a tightly built script, since the film repeats the familiar on purpose.
