What Aro Tolbukhin in the Mind of a Killer Is About
The film tells the story of Aro Tolbukhin, a man who left Hungary for Guatemala and ended up on death row for burning seven people to death in the infirmary of a mission; a harsh childhood, the death of his sister, his closeness to Sister Carmen at the mission and the disaster that follows are given in turn. But no such person exists: Aro Tolbukhin is invented and every piece of documentary footage in the film is staged. By telling fiction in the form of a documentary, the production tests what an audience believes and why. The ninety five minute film by Isaac Pierre Racine, Agusti Villaronga and Lydia Zimmermann was completed in 2002 and was sent as Mexico’s entry for the Oscar.
