What Asia Is About
Asia is the single mother of seventeen year old Vika; the two of them are Russian immigrants in Israel who share a home and very little else. As Vika’s health declines, Asia finds her voice as a mother for the first time and learns to hold on to the time they have left. Ruthy Pribar’s eighty five minute first feature tells this without turning care into a display of sacrifice, and without making either woman weak. The film won best actress, best cinematography and the Nora Ephron Prize at the Tribeca Film Festival, took best picture at Israel’s Ophir Awards and was sent as the country’s entry for the Academy Award. Alena Yiv plays Asia and Shira Haas plays Vika.
