What Asura Is About

Fifteenth-century Japan in the middle of a great famine. An abandoned child grows up like a wild animal, unable to speak and doing whatever survival requires. When he encounters other people he will have to learn to hold the animal down. The film is adapted from George Akiyama's manga, published in 1970, which caused an outcry in Japan and was restricted. A warning is needed: the famine scenes, cannibalism included, are extremely hard, and the film shows this within its first minutes. Do not be misled by the fact that it is animated; this is in no sense a children's film.
