What At Five in the Afternoon Is About
The Taliban are gone but the traditional pressure in Kabul has not moved. Nogreh lives with her father and with Leylomah, her sister in law, whose husband is missing. Leylomah's whole problem is feeding her baby: she is too hungry herself to produce milk. Nogreh's is different. She attends a secular girls' school without her father knowing, wears white court shoes instead of the usual slippers under her burqa, and wants to become president of Afghanistan. Samira Makhmalbaf's film was the first shot in Kabul after the American bombardment. Its title comes from the refrain of Lorca's lament for Ignacio Sánchez Mejías. It won the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2003.
