Paul Goldman’s 2002 film adapts two novels by Phillip Gwynne and is set in a coastal town in South Australia. Gary, sixteen, and his Aboriginal friend Dumby play in the same football side; the team wins the local championship, and then the best player award is withheld from Dumby by officials who are simply racist. What follows leaves Gary with a choice between saying what happened and keeping quiet. The film itself became a dispute: people from the Point Pearce Aboriginal community said the story drew on a real killing from 1977 and that it had been used without their consent, and they protested its screenings.
