What Avane Srimannarayana Is About
Sachin Ravi Payyanur's 2019 Kannada film follows Narayana, a corrupt policeman chasing a lost treasure. Set in a small town, it uses western, adventure and comedy together, a mixture rarely attempted at this scale in Indian cinema. Its strength is in the design: an invented town, a bandit order with its own rules, and a secondary story built around a theatre troupe. Rakshit Shetty leads and co-wrote it. The production took a long time and the budget was large for Kannada cinema. Its weakness is a running time approaching three hours and a middle section that stretches needlessly. Who it's for: viewers who like Indian adventure cinema and genre-mixing productions. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a short narrative, or avoiding scenes of violence.
