Avariya - Cop's Daughter

Valeriya, still at school, is known to everyone as Avariya, meaning Crash. She cannot get on with her family, will not follow the rules, and is out on the street at night. Her father is a policeman and picks her up from the station most evenings; he does not understand her, he only tries to bring her into line. One night the girl is attacked by a group. After that the father sets aside every rule of his own profession. Mikhail Tumanishvili's film came out in 1989, in the most open period of glasnost. Youth subcultures, the street and the gulf between the police and the family had never been shown this directly in Soviet cinema. Oksana Arbuzova was sixteen in the lead. The telling does not make a spectacle of the attack; what it looks at is what the father does afterwards and what it costs.
