Ayothi

R. Manthira Moorthy's 2023 Tamil film follows a family travelling south on a pilgrimage. The mother dies in an accident on the way, and the father and two children are left with the funeral arrangements in a city whose language they do not speak. The person who helps them is a local Muslim man. That is the film's whole subject: a man of another faith works to make a rite possible according to the family's own custom, and the father struggles at first to accept it. The narrative caricatures neither side. Sasikumar plays the man who helps; the tension comes not from religious argument but from practical obstacles. The tone is measured and the emotional emphasis rises in the final section. Who it's for: those who like Tamil family drama and narratives across faiths. Who it's not for: viewers who would rather not see death and funeral procedures shown in detail.
