France in the 1880s. Félicie escapes an orphanage in Brittany to become a dancer at the Paris Opera. The film's best idea is saved for the end: the climax plays out on the Statue of Liberty under construction in Gustave Eiffel's workshop, before it ever left for America. It is a Canadian and French co-production, retitled Leap! for the United States, where The Weinstein Company released it in August 2017. The American version changed voices too. Dane DeHaan had voiced Victor originally and was replaced by Nat Wolff, with Mel Brooks and Kate McKinnon added. Elle Fanning stayed as Félicie in both. On a 30 million dollar budget it took around 120 million worldwide, with the United States its best territory at 21.9 million. Critics split, but audiences gave it an A on CinemaScore. Who it is for: children who like dance and persistence stories, and viewers who enjoy period detail. Who it is not for: anyone hoping for an original script. The story rarely leaves the familiar orphanage and dream template.
