What Banned from Broadcast: The Movie - Saiko! The Large Family Is About
Toshikazu Nagae's 2009 Japanese film is the cinema version of the television series of the same name, built as a mock documentary. A Canadian director films a large family in Japan; they appear cheerful from outside, but as the camera stays the problems surface. The series' method is the conceit of a documentary banned from broadcast coming to light; the images are deliberately amateur and censorship bars are used. That forces the viewer to look at detail, and the horror comes largely from what appears in the background. The production is extremely cheap and the acting natural. The pace is slow and the effect may be limited for anyone who does not know the series. Who it's for: viewers who like mock-documentary horror and Japanese low-budget horror. Who it's not for: anyone wanting showy horror, or avoiding content involving abuse within a family.
