Battle of Oslo

Daniel Fahre's 2025 Norwegian film covers the morning of 9 April 1940. As German warships enter the Oslo fjord, Colonel Birger Eriksen, commanding the undermanned Oscarsborg fortress, decides to open fire without waiting for orders. The historical event supplies all the tension. The guns in the fortress are old, the crew untrained and Eriksen has no clear authority; if he judges wrong he will have committed a war crime. Sinking the heavy cruiser Blucher bought the hours the Norwegian king and government needed to leave the capital. The film tries to stay faithful to the military detail, showing the torpedo battery, the darkness and the breakdown in communication. Bjorn Sundquist's Eriksen is not constructed as a hero; he is hesitant, old and afraid of the responsibility. Who it's for: those interested in Second World War history and Scandinavian war films. Who it's not for: viewers wanting character depth; the film concentrates almost entirely on one operation.
