What Bayou Maharajah: The Tragic Genius of James Booker Is About
James Booker played piano in New Orleans. What he played is not easy to describe. Blues, jazz and classical sat together in it. On stage he was flamboyant and strange. His life, though, was never easy. He was Black and he was gay. He had lost an eye. He struggled with addiction for a long time. Prejudice and isolation were part of his life. The documentary tells this without covering any of it up. Concert footage never shown before is used. There are personal photographs and interviews too. Among those speaking are Dr. John and Harry Connick Jr. James Booker and Dr. John appear in the ninety minute documentary, an American production Lily Keber finished in 2013.
