What Be Somebody Is About
Shanghai in the Republican era. A group of film people whose careers have stalled are summoned to a grand house to build a picture out of a gruesome murder case that has shaken the city, in the expectation that it will make all of them famous. As they argue the script around the table the story starts rewriting itself, because the murderer is in the room and the truth is stranger than anything they were inventing. Liu Xunzimo keeps almost the entire film in one location and runs a locked-room mystery and a satire of the film business through each other. Who is hiding what they know, and who is stealing whose story, stays open to the end.
