What Bedtime Fairy Tales for Crocodiles Is About
Miguel Arcángel sets out with his son for the town where he was born, to see his gravely ill father. As the journey goes on, memory and fable mix in the man’s mind and the family’s past unfolds as a chain running from the War of the Reform through the Mexican Revolution to the present. At the centre of the account stands a belief: a child who dares to look a coyote in the eyes will never sleep or dream again, and this is what the family has carried through the generations. The son beside him is autistic, and the film makes him neither a burden nor a symbol, keeping him simply as someone walking alongside his father. Arturo Ríos and Luisa Huertas appear in Ignacio Ortiz’s hundred and eight minute Mexican film; it was completed in 2002 and was named best film at the Ariel awards.
