What Before the Storm Is About
Reza Parsa’s first feature runs two stories side by side. One belongs to Leo, a seventh grader harassed by a boy two years older, who sets out to get even. The other belongs to Ali, the father of the girl Leo has a crush on: an opposition group from the country he left finds him and wants him to kill an important man, threatening to kill the family he left behind if he refuses. Both stories ask the same thing, whether it is possible to stay outside violence and what is left of a person once it is not. The film keeps either outcome hidden until it ties the two together. Per Graffman plays Ali and Emil Odepark plays Leo. It opened in Sweden on 22 September 2000 and was sold to thirty-five countries.
