What Believe in Me Is About
A young coach who goes to a conservative small town to work in high school basketball is put in charge of the girls’ team rather than the boys’ by a decision of the school board. Nobody in the town believes girls should be playing seriously; the coach’s job turns out to be dealing with that disbelief rather than with tactics on the court, and as the team wins, what the town thinks about itself begins to change too. Robert Collector’s hundred and thirty one minute American film was adapted from a book by Harold Keith and rests on the real story of Jim Keith, a coach who took charge of an Oklahoma high school girls’ team in the 1960s. Jeffrey Donovan plays the coach and Samantha Mathis his wife, with Bruce Dern, Bob Gunton and Heather Matarazzo in the cast. It was completed in 2006.
