Ela Ionescu What Beside Me Is About
A metro train stops between two stations on the morning after a fire in a nightclub in Bucharest. The people in the carriage do not know one another and would not normally want to; but as the wait stretches out they are forced to talk. What is happening outside also brings out what each of them is carrying inside; the disaster of one night hangs over all of them. The film does not show the event directly but tells the morning that came after. Building the state of a city inside one closed carriage is what the film sets out to do. The account gives no reckoning of the event; it looks at how one morning stands in people. Victoria Cocias appears in Tedy Necula’s eighty four minute Romanian film, completed in 2018.
