Moscow, the nineties. Four friends lose everything in one night. A job Kostyan got mixed up in ends badly and staying in the city becomes impossible. They have a stolen black car; in that period such a car counted as a mark of status. They set off. They leave Moscow and drive into the provinces. The petrol runs out, the money runs out, and at every stop a new trouble appears. Both the police and their creditors are after them. All four slowly understand that they cannot go back. Pyotr Buslov directs. Vladimir Vdovichenkov and Andrey Merzlikin are in the cast. It is a Russian production. The film was a large commercial success in Russia and among the most talked about domestic productions of the period. Its ground is the transition of the nineties; economic collapse, criminal organisations and institutions ceasing to function are inside the narrative. The form is a road film and the narrative shows the provinces in detail; each stop is a separate picture of Russia. The narrative does not romanticise its characters; all four carry the consequence of their own decisions. Its music became widely known and the song was a success in its own right.
