What Birgit Haas Must Be Killed Is About
Inside French intelligence there is a new unit set up for jobs too sensitive for the police or the official services to take on. The assignment is plain: to eliminate Birgitt Haas, a German militant. The death must not look political, so it is to be staged as a crime of passion, which requires an agent to make the woman fall in love with him. Laurent Heynemann's film is not an action picture but a cold moral story. The real question is not what the woman did; it is how the state uses one person in order to remove another. Philippe Noiret and Jean Rochefort play the two men at the head of the unit. The armed groups of 1970s Europe and the counter-methods of states sit in the background of the film.
