What Black Barons Is About
Zdeněk Sirový's 1992 Czech film is adapted from a novel by Miloslav Švandrlík. In Czechoslovakia in the fifties, young men the regime considered politically unreliable did their military service in unarmed labour battalions, units popularly known as the black barons. The film tells life in those battalions as comedy: meaningless orders, a system that functions without anyone knowing what for, endless drudgery. The picture is as real as it is funny; the comedy here does not lighten the subject, it makes the absurdity visible. The film could only be made after the regime had fallen, in 1992.
