Black Beauty

A wild horse captured and brought to a ranch arrives at the same time as a girl who has lost her family. Neither wants to go near anyone. The film tells the story in the horse's voice and shows each change of owner; the narrative comes down to the question of whose property an animal is. The novel is set in England and this adaptation moves it to America, recasting the horse as a mustang. Ashley Avis wrote and directed. Kate Winslet provides the narration. It is adapted from Anna Sewell's novel. A real warning: there are scenes of mistreatment of an animal and a death. It may be heavy for small children.
